Irfan Habib is an Indian historian and professor
emeritus at Aligarh Muslim University, known for his work on the economic and
social history of India. He has written extensively on the history of the
Indian independence movement and the Mughal Empire, and has also published
works on the history of science and technology in India. Habib has received
numerous awards for his contributions to the field of history, including the
Padma Bhushan, one of India’s highest civilian honors.

Irfan Habib is considered one of the foremost
authorities on the history of India, and has made significant contributions to
the study of medieval and modern India. He was born in 1931 in Srinagar, Jammu
and Kashmir, and received his early education in India and the United States.
He obtained his bachelor’s degree from Aligarh Muslim University and his
doctorate from the University of London.

In addition to his academic work, Habib has also been
involved in various social and political causes. He has served as the chairman
of the Indian Council of Historical Research and has been a member of various
committees and commissions related to education and cultural affairs in India.
He has also been an active member of the Indian Communist Party and has written

the Padma Bhushan, the Sahitya Akademi Award, and the President’s Award for
Best Teacher. He has also been honored with several honorary degrees from

of the Indian School of International Studies and has been a member of the
board of governors of several other educational institutions. He has also been
