Cooch Behar College: A Beacon of Higher Education in
Northern West Bengal
Cooch Behar College is a prestigious institution of higher
education located in the heart of the district town of Cooch Behar in Northern
West Bengal, India. Established in 1970, the college has been imparting quality
education to a large n umber of students from diverse socio-cultural backgrounds
in the district and its surrounding region. The college is recognized by the
University Grants Commission (UGC) and affiliated to Cooch Behar Panchanan
Barma University since 2015-16.
The college has a lush green campus with an impressive
building, well-equipped library, and modern ICT methods. The faculty members of
all departments are competent and dedicated to providing the best academic and
extracurricular guidance to the students.
The college has been assessed by the National Assessment and
Accreditation Council (NAAC) and received a B++ grade with a 2.78 scale in
October 2016, in its second cycle of assessment. The college has been successfully
conducting Certificate and Diploma courses in Non-Formal Sanskrit Education
(affiliated by Central Sanskrit University, New Delhi) since 2015-16 academic
session.
The college introduced the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS)
in the 2017-18 academic session, which provides flexibility to the students to
choose courses of their interest. The college also introduced post-graduation
courses in Geography (M.Sc in Geography) in the 2018-19 academic session and
English (M.A in English) in the 2019-20 academic session.
The college offers three-year regular Bachelor of Business
Administration (BBA) courses (Recognized by UGC & affiliated to Cooch Behar
Panchanan Barma University) since 2006. It has also introduced a three-year
regular Bachelor of Business Management (BBM) course in Tourism, Aviation &
Hospitality (Recognized by UGC & affiliated to Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma
University) in 2017.
The college is the only institution in the Cooch Behar
sub-division that offers courses in Arts, Commerce, Science, and Management
streams. Students can opt for any of the career-oriented program courses with
their regular courses. These courses include Certificate Course, Diploma
Course, and Advanced Diploma Course in the streams of Computer Application,
Women’s Studies, Functional and Communicative English, Eco-Tourism, and
Management.
The college aims to impart sound and meaningful higher
education to its students and help them achieve successful professional
careers. It encourages its students to strive for excellence in every field of
life and become ideal and responsible citizens of the country. The college
produces intellectually sound, morally upright, socially concerned students to
serve the nation.
Admission in Honours courses is through counseling, and initially,
a provisional merit list is published. If any correction is needed, it is done
within the declared time, and after that, the final merit list is published. No
complaints regarding correction will be entertained after the publication of
the final merit list. College information, notice regarding the total number of
seats in different categories & admission-related issues, will be published
on the college website and notice board.
The courses offered at Cooch Behar College. It looks like
the college offers a variety of degree courses in arts, commerce, science,
management, and UGC-NSQF.
For Arts (UG) Honours, the college offers eight subjects,
including Geography, English, Sanskrit, Bengali, History, Political Science,
Philosophy, and Economics. In addition, the college also offers ten subjects
for Programme Course, including Geography, English, Sanskrit, Bengali, History,
Political Science, Philosophy, Economics, Physical Education, and Education.
For Commerce (UG), the college offers only one subject for
Honours, which is Accountancy.
For Science (UG) Honours, the college offers four subjects,
including Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Computer Science. The college
also offers four subjects for Programme Course, including Physics, Chemistry,
Mathematics, and Computer Science.
For Management (UG), the college offers two courses: B.B.A
and B.B.M, which include various specializations such as Marketing, Finance,
Human Resource, Tourism, Aviation, and Hospitality.
For UGC-NSQF (UG), the college offers a certificate and
diploma course in Geoinformatics.
For Post Graduate (PG), the college offers M.Sc in Geography
and M.A in English. Additionally, the college offers four COP (Career Oriented
Programme) certificate and advance diploma courses in Computer Application,
Communicative English, Women Studies, and Eco-Tourism.
Finally, there are some restrictions on certain subjects.
Candidates with certificates of District/State/National/International level
sports can apply for Physical Education as a General elective subject.
Candidates with Education subject in their Higher Secondary/12th standard are
eligible to apply for Education as a General subject. Candidates securing 60%
or above marks in Geography in their Higher Secondary/12th standard are
eligible to apply for Geography as a Generic elective subject.
In conclusion, Cooch Behar College is a beacon of higher
education in Northern West Bengal. The college has evolved into an excellent
center of higher education in the district and has been imparting education not
only in both Honours and Programme courses in Humanities, Commerce, Science,
and Management but also in Post Graduation (in Geography and English subjects)
to a large number of students hailing from various race, community, and diverse
socio-cultural milieu of Cooch Behar and the surrounding region.
