Indian architecture has developed over the course of 5000 years. Its history is divided into ancient, medieval, and modern period, with transitions between them marked by changes in technology, materials, and society.

Ancient period: India’s ancient architecture is characterized by its use of stone and brick, often combined with wood. The earliest known examples of Indian architecture are from the Indus Valley Civilization, which flourished from 3300-1500 BCE. This period saw the development of monumental architecture, such as the Great Bath of Mohenjo-Daro and the city of Harappa.

Medieval period: This period saw the rise of various regional styles, such as the Hindu temple architecture of South India and the Islamic architecture of the Mughal Empire. Major monuments from this period include the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, and Fatehpur Sikri.

Modern period: This period saw the emergence of modern architecture in India, with the development of concrete and steel-framed structures. Major examples include the National Rail Museum in New Delhi, the Lotus Temple in Delhi, and the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. This period also saw the development of several iconic landmarks such as the Gateway of India in Mumbai and the Taj Mahal in Agra.
